Introduction

This machine is intended to be used by hired, commercial operators and residential homeowners for maintaining turf on slopes, tight undulations, areas near water, or bunker lips. Using this product for purposes other than its intended use could prove dangerous to you and bystanders.

Read this information carefully to learn how to operate and maintain your product properly and to avoid injury and product damage. You are responsible for operating the product properly and safely.

It is a violation of California Public Resource Code Section 4442 or 4443 to use or operate the engine on any forest-covered, brush-covered, or grass-covered land unless the engine is equipped with a spark arrester, as defined in Section 4442, maintained in effective working order or the engine is constructed, equipped, and maintained for the prevention of fire.

For models with stated engine horsepower, the gross horsepower of the engine was laboratory rated by the engine manufacturer in accordance with SAE J1349. As configured to meet safety, emission, and operating requirements, the actual engine horsepower of this class of machine will be significantly lower.

Assembling the Handle

  1. Slide the lower handle into the frame (Figure 3).

  2. Secure each side with a retaining pin and a hairpin (Figure 3).

  3. Secure the footstop to the right side of the lower handle using an M6 nut, and M6 bolt, and 2 washers (Figure 3).

  4. Attach the footstop to the frame with a retaining pin and a hairpin (Figure 3).

  5. Connect the upper handle to the lower handle by securing each side with a U-bolt, an M6 washer, and a handwheel (Figure 4).

Filling the Engine with Oil

Important: Your machine does not come with oil in the engine. Before starting the engine, fill the engine with oil.

  1. Move the machine to a level surface.

  2. Remove the dipstick by rotating the cap counterclockwise and pulling it out (Figure 5).

  3. Carefully pour about 3/4 of the engine capacity of oil into the oil-fill tube (Figure 6).

  4. Wait 3 minutes for the oil to settle in the engine.

  5. Wipe the dipstick clean with a clean cloth.

  6. Insert the dipstick into the oil-fill tube, but do not screw it in, then remove the dipstick.

  7. Read the oil level on the dipstick (Figure 5).

    • If the oil level on the dipstick is too low, carefully pour a small amount of oil into the oil-fill tube, wait 3 minutes, and repeat steps 5 through 7 until the oil on the dipstick is at the correct level.

    • If the oil level on the dipstick is too high, drain the excess oil until the oil on the dipstick is at the correct level; refer to Changing the Engine Oil.

    Important: If the oil level in the engine is too low or too high and you run the engine, you may damage the engine.

  8. Install the dipstick and hand tighten it securely.

    Important: Change the engine oil after the first 5 operating hours; change it yearly thereafter. Refer to Changing the Engine Oil.

Before Operation Safety

General Safety

  • Always shut off the machine, wait for all moving parts to stop, and allow the machine to cool before adjusting, servicing, cleaning, or storing it.

  • Become familiar with the safe operation of the equipment, operator controls, and safety signs.

  • Check that all guards and safety devices are in place and working properly.

  • Always inspect the machine to ensure that the cutting unit bolt, line, and disc are not worn or damaged.

  • Inspect the area where you will use the machine and remove all objects that could interfere with the operation of the machine or that the machine could throw.

  • Adjusting the cutting height may bring you into contact with the moving disc, causing serious injury.

Fuel Safety

  • Fuel is extremely flammable and highly explosive. A fire or explosion from fuel can burn you and others and can damage property.

    • To prevent a static charge from igniting the fuel, place the container and/or machine directly on the ground before filling, not in a vehicle or on an object.

    • Fill the fuel tank outdoors, in an open area, when the engine is cold. Wipe up any fuel that spills.

    • Do not handle fuel when smoking or around an open flame or sparks.

    • Do not remove the fuel cap or add fuel to the tank while the engine is running or hot.

    • If you spill fuel, do not attempt to start the engine. Avoid creating a source of ignition until the fuel vapors have dissipated.

    • Store fuel in an approved container and keep it out of the reach of children.

  • Fuel is harmful or fatal if swallowed. Long-term exposure to vapors can cause serious injury and illness.

    • Avoid prolonged breathing of vapors.

    • Keep your hands and face away from the nozzle and the fuel-tank opening.

    • Keep fuel away from your eyes and skin.

Filling the Fuel Tank

  • For best results, use only clean, fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 87 or higher ((R+M)/2 rating method).

  • Oxygenated fuel with up to 10% ethanol or 15% MTBE by volume is acceptable.

  • Do not use ethanol blends of gasoline, such as E15 or E85, with more than 10% ethanol by volume. Performance problems and/or engine damage may result, which may not be covered under warranty.

  • Do not use gasoline containing methanol.

  • Do not store fuel either in the fuel tank or in fuel containers over the winter unless fuel stabilizer has been added to the fuel.

  • Do not add oil to gasoline.

Fill the fuel tank with fresh unleaded regular gasoline from a major name-brand service station (Figure 9).

Important: To reduce starting problems, add fuel stabilizer/conditioner to fresh fuel as directed by the fuel-stabilizer manufacturer.

Checking the Engine-Oil Level

  1. Move the machine to a level surface.

  4. Insert the dipstick into the oil-fill tube, but do not screw it in, then remove the dipstick.

  5. Read the oil level on the dipstick (Figure 10).

    • If the oil level on the dipstick is too low (Figure 10), carefully pour a small amount of multigrade mineral SAE 10W-30 oil with an API series classification of SJ or higher into the oil-fill tube, wait 3 minutes, and repeat steps 3 through 5 until the oil on the dipstick is at the correct level.

    • If the oil level on the dipstick is too high (Figure 10), drain the excess oil until the oil on the dipstick is at the correct level; refer to Changing the Engine Oil.

    Important: If the oil level in the engine is too low or too high and you run the engine, you may damage the engine.

  6. Install the dipstick into the oil-fill tube securely.

    Important: Change the engine oil after the first 5 operating hours; change it yearly thereafter. Refer to Changing the Engine Oil.

Adjusting the Cutting Height

Warning

Adjusting the cutting height may bring you into contact with the moving cutting unit, causing serious injury.

  • Shut off the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.

  • Wear gloves while handling the cutting unit.

Caution

If the engine has been running, the muffler will be hot and can severely burn you.

Keep away from the hot muffler.

Adjust the cutting height as desired.

  1. Turn the fuel switch to the OFF position.

  2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

  3. Tilt the machine on its side, with the dipstick down.

  4. Wearing protective gloves, remove the nylon cutting line.

  5. Install the cutting line at the desired height.

During Operation

During Operation Safety

General Safety

  • Wear appropriate clothing, including eye protection; long pants; substantial, slip-resistant footwear; and hearing protection. Tie back long hair and do not wear loose clothing or loose jewelry.

  • Use your full attention while operating the machine. Do not engage in any activity that causes distractions; otherwise, injury or property damage may occur.

  • Do not operate the machine while ill, tired, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

  • Contacting the disc or line can result in personal injury. Shut off the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop before leaving the operating position.

  • When you release the operator-presence control, the engine should shut off and the cutting unit should stop within 7 seconds. If not, stop using your machine immediately and contact an Authorized Service Dealer.

  • Keep bystanders out of the operating area. Keep small children out of the operating area and under the watchful care of a responsible adult who is not operating the machine. Stop the machine if anyone enters the area.

  • Operate the machine only in good visibility and appropriate weather conditions. Do not operate the machine when there is the risk of lightning.

  • Use extreme care when approaching blind corners, shrubs, trees, or other objects that may block your view.

  • Watch for holes, ruts, bumps, rocks, or other hidden objects. Uneven terrain could cause you to lose your balance or footing.

  • If the machine strikes an object or starts to vibrate, immediately shut off the engine, wait for all moving parts to stop, and disconnect the wire from the spark plug before examining the machine for damage. Make all necessary repairs before resuming operation.

  • If the engine has been running, it will be hot and can severely burn you. Keep away from the hot engine.

  • Use accessories and attachments approved by Toro only.

Starting the Engine

  1. Open the fuel tank vent by turning the vent knob at least 2 or 3 turns counterclockwise.

  2. Turn the fuel valve to the ON position (Figure 12).

  3. Hold the operator-presence control against the handle (Figure 13).

  4. Place your foot on the deck and tilt the machine toward you (Figure 14).

  5. Pull the recoil-start handle.

    Note: Do not allow the recoil-start handle to snap back against the engine. Return it gently to prevent damage to the starter.

Note: If the machine does not start after several attempts, contact an Authorized Service Dealer.

Shutting Off the Engine

  • Ensure that the engine shuts off within 7 seconds after releasing the operator-presence control.

    To shut off the engine, release the operator-presence control (Figure 16).

    Important: When you release the operator-presence control, the engine should shut off and the cutting line should stop within 7 seconds. If they do not stop properly, stop using your machine immediately and contact an Authorized Service Dealer.

    Operating Tips

    General Mowing Tips

    Important: Operating the machine on slopes of more than 25° will cause severe engine damage due to a lack of lubrication. Do not operate the machine on slopes greater than 25°.

    • Inspect the area where you will use the machine and remove all objects that the machine could throw.

    • Avoid striking solid objects with the cutting line. Never deliberately mow over any object.

    • If the machine strikes an object or starts to vibrate, immediately shut off the engine, disconnect the wire from the spark plug, and examine the machine for damage.

    • For best performance, install new cutting lines before the cutting season begins.

    • Replace the cutting line when necessary with Toro replacement cutting line.

    • Ensure that the replacement cutting line is the same length as the intact cutting line.

    Cutting Grass

    • Cut only about a third of the grass blade at a time. Do not cut below the highest setting (30 mm or 1.2 inches) unless the grass is sparse or it is late fall when grass growth begins to slow down. Refer to Adjusting the Cutting Height.

    • Mowing grass over 15 cm (6 inches) in length is not recommended. If the grass is too long, the machine may plug and cause the engine to stall.

    • Wet grass and leaves tend to clump on the yard and can cause the machine to plug or the engine to stall. Avoid mowing in wet conditions.

    • Be aware of a potential fire hazard in very dry conditions, follow all local fire warnings, and keep the machine free of dry grass and leaf debris.

    • If the finished lawn appearance is unsatisfactory, try 1 or more of the following:

      • Inspect the underside of the cutting unit for worn or damaged components (e.g., the cutting line) and repair or replace them if necessary.

      • Walk at a slower pace while mowing.

      • Raise the cutting height on your machine.

      • Cut the grass more frequently.

      • Overlap cutting swaths instead of cutting a full swath with each pass.

    Cutting Leaves

    • After cutting the lawn, ensure that half of the lawn shows through the cut leaf cover. You may need to make more than a single pass over the leaves.

    • Mowing grass over 15 cm (6 inches) in length is not recommended. If the leaf cover is too thick, the machine may plug and cause the engine to stall.

    • Slow down your mowing speed if the machine does not cut the leaves finely enough.

    Preparing for Maintenance

    Run the engine dry or remove the fuel with a hand pump; never siphon.

    1. Shut off the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.

    2. Disconnect the spark-plug wire from the spark plug (Figure 17) before performing any maintenance procedure.

      Important: Always tip the machine onto its side, with the dipstick down. If the machine is tipped in another direction, oil may fill the valve train, requiring at least 30 minutes to drain.

    3. After performing the maintenance procedure(s), connect the spark-plug wire to the spark plug.

    Servicing the Air Filter

    1. Press down on the latch tabs on top of the air-filter cover (Figure 18).

    2. Open the cover (Figure 18).

    3. Remove the air filter (Figure 18).

    4. Inspect the air filter.

      1. If the air filter is damaged or is wet with oil or fuel, replace it.

      2. If the air filter is dirty, tap it on a hard surface several times or blow compressed air less than 207 kPa (30 psi) through the side of the filter that faces the engine.

        Note: Do not brush the dirt off the filter; brushing forces dirt into the fibers.

    5. Remove dirt from the air-filter body and cover using a moist rag. Do not wipe dirt into the air duct.

    6. Insert the air filter into the air-filter body (Figure 18).

    7. Install the cover (Figure 18).

    Changing the Engine Oil

    1. Ensure that the fuel tank contains little or no fuel so that the fuel does not leak when you tip the engine onto its side.

    3. Remove the dipstick by rotating the cap counterclockwise and pulling it out (Figure 19).

    4. Tip the machine onto its side (so that the air filter is up) to drain the used oil from the oil-fill tube.

    5. After draining the used oil, return the machine to the operating position.

    6. Carefully pour about 3/4 of the engine capacity of oil into the oil-fill tube.

    7. Wait 3 minutes for the oil to settle in the engine.

    8. Wipe the dipstick clean with a clean cloth.

    9. Insert the dipstick into the oil-fill tube, but do not screw it in, then remove the dipstick.

    10. Read the oil level on the dipstick (Figure 19).

      • If the oil level on the dipstick is too low, carefully pour a small amount of oil into the oil-fill tube, wait 3 minutes, and repeat steps 8 through 10 until the oil level on the dipstick is correct.

      • If the oil level on the dipstick is too high, drain the excess oil until the oil level on the dipstick is correct.

      Important: If the oil level in the engine is too low or too high and you run the engine, you may damage the engine.

    11. Install the dipstick into the oil-fill tube securely.

    12. Recycle the used oil properly.

    Servicing the Spark Plug

  • Service the spark plug and replace it if necessary.

    Use a Champion RN9YC spark plug or equivalent.

    1. Shut off the engine and wait for all moving parts to stop.

    2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

    3. Clean around the spark plug.

    4. Remove the spark plug from the cylinder head.

      Important: Replace a cracked, fouled, or dirty spark plug. Do not clean the electrodes because grit entering the cylinder can damage the engine.

    5. Set the gap on the plug to 0.76 mm (0.030 inch) as shown in Figure 20.

    6. Install the spark plug.

    7. Torque the plug to 20 N∙m (15 ft-lb).

    8. Connect the wire to the spark plug.

    Replacing the Cutting Line

    1. Turn the fuel valve to the OFF position and close the vent knob.

    2. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

    3. Turn the machine on its side, with the dipstick facing down.

    4. Wearing protective gloves, remove the nylon cutting line.

    5. Place 1 length of nylon cutting line into the desired cutting-height setting. Ensure that a second line of the same length is placed in the corresponding cutting height on the opposite side of the cutting disc.

    Note: If using a spare reel, cut the line to a length of 20 cm (7-7/8 inches).

    Cleaning the Machine

    2. Use a brush or compressed air to remove grass and debris from the exhaust guard, the top cowl, and the surrounding deck areas.

    Storage

    Store the machine in a cool, clean, dry place.

    • Always shut off the machine, wait for all moving parts to stop, and allow the machine to cool before adjusting, servicing, cleaning, or storing it.

    • Allow the engine to cool before storing the machine in any enclosure.

    • Never store the machine or fuel container where there is an open flame, spark, or pilot light, such as on a water heater or on other appliances.

    Preparing the Machine for Storage

    Warning

    Fuel vapors can explode.

    • Do not store fuel more than 30 days.

    • Do not store the machine in an enclosure near an open flame.

    • Allow the engine to cool before storing it.

    1. On the last refueling of the year, add fuel stabilizer to the fuel as directed by the engine manufacturer.

    2. Run the machine until the engine shuts off from running out of fuel.

    3. Prime the engine and start it again.

    4. Allow the engine to run until it shuts off. When you can no longer start the engine, it is sufficiently dry.

    5. If you are storing the machine hanging on a wall, switch the fuel valve off and close the vent of the fuel cap.

    6. Disconnect the wire from the spark plug.

    7. Remove the spark plug, add 30 ml (1 fl oz) of oil through the spark-plug hole, and pull the starter rope slowly several times to distribute oil throughout the cylinder to prevent cylinder corrosion during the off-season.

    8. Install the spark plug and tighten it with a torque wrench to 20 N∙m (15 ft-lb).

    9. Tighten all nuts, bolts, and screws.

    Troubleshooting

    4. The spark plug is pitted, fouled, or the gap is incorrect.
    5. The engine oil level is too low, too high, or excessively dirty.
    6. The fuel tank contains stale fuel.
    1. Clean the fuel cap vent hole or replace the fuel cap.
    2. Clean the air-filter element and/or replace it.
    3. Clean under the machine housing.
    4. Check the spark plug and adjust the gap if necessary. Replace the spark plug if it is pitted, fouled, or cracked.

    The engine runs rough.
